Caohagan Quilts - More from AQS QuiltWeek

Special exhibit program cover - click to enlarge...
It is always wonderful when a learning experience presents itself in an unexpected way...Wednesday, when I visited the AQS QuiltWeek show in Des Moines, not only was I inspired, but I was educated along the way. "Celebrating Quilts the Caohagan Way" was one of the special exhibits at the show - and these beautiful and bright quilts were quite a treat to see in person.

After viewing my photographs from the show and looking through the show book, I decided I wanted to do a little reading and research on Caohagan and these colorful island quilts....there was just something special and inviting about these one-of-a-kind quilts and I needed to know more...

Caohagan is an extremely small island in the Philippines located between Cebu and Bohol - it is just over 31 square miles and is home to 600 people - it is known for it's scenic beaches and amazing marine life. Katsuhiko Sakiyama purchased the island in 1987, and settled there with his wife 1991.  His wife Junko taught quilting in Japan, so it was no surprise when she decided to teach the women from Caohagan about the craft of handwork. Caohagan is a quiet village whose main source of income has always been fishing; however, today the residents are earning bigger profits from the art of quilting - as the men thrive on the bounty of the sea, the women (and some men) are stitching quilts.

Today more than 120 of the island's 600 residents are quilters...and their earnings make up 1/3 of the island's total income. Proceeds from quilt sales help support the needs of the island residents, with focus on healthcare ad education. Caohagan quilts are handmade and individually created without any rough sketches or planning. Using vivid colors and island images, each artisan cuts and sews to create pieces/blocks for their quilt. Each quilt is hand pieced and hand quilted and takes from three to four months to complete...and each one is completely unique.

Here are just a few of the cheerful quilts on display...each quilt had a tag with details and a photo of the creator(s)...

A Colorful and Inspiring Day

Friday was a road trip day...and thank goodness...I needed it even more than I thought! My dear friend Lorrie and I made a trip to Omaha, Nebraska for the 4th Annual AccuQuilt Barn Quilt Unveiling event...and we had a FABULOUS day. We left Des Moines a little before 8:00 and made it to AccuQuilt a few minutes before 10:00...perfect timing, as the festivities started at 10:00 AM. We were greeted with a very warm welcome from Steve Nabity (CEO), Linda Pumphrey (National Sales Manager), Lynn Gibney (Director of Marketing), and all my favorite AccuQuilt staff members...seriously AccuQuilt has the friendliest staff around...and they were all outside to greet us! Once inside, I couldn't wait to meet the special guest Ricky Tims (woohoo!)...he was kind enough to autograph my GO! Arabesque #3 die (one of his designer dies for the AccuQuilt GO! Fabric Cutter) and pose for a couple photos (here is where I thank Lorrie for taking the photos of me with Ricky Tims). I was also thrilled to see a bunch of familiar faces from last year...always so much fun to see quilting friends from across the country (and Canada)!

After meeting celebrity quilter Ricky Tims, we entered the AccuQuilt Quilt Gallery (always worth a visit if you are in the Omaha area) where some of his AMAZING quilts were on display...they were breathtaking...I mean SERIOUSLY incredible! I managed to get most, if not all, of them photographed for you...even with the hoards of people crowded in for viewing..click on any image for a larger, more detailed photo...

Next we entered the AccuQuilt Dream Studio, where attendees of the event were busy making pillow cases  for American Patchwork & Quilting 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge...it was insane in the dream studio (as you can see from the photo) - wall to wall people busy sewing pillow cases...it was almost overwhelming just to walk across the room!

Our next stop was the AccuQuilt warehouse where there was shopping...yes, I said shopping! AccuQuilt had set-up a merchandise area with all sorts of goodies for sale...including "gently used dies" at greatly reduced prices...and how could I pass that up...both Lorrie and I found several dies we *had to* have!

We then made our way outside to the where Ricky Tims would be making his presentation to a tent full of enthusiastic quilters...and what a marvelous presentation it was...thoroughly enjoyable. Ricky is so down to earth...and listening to his life story was inspiring and uplifting...

Next was a performance by "Steve and the Stitches"...and to say it was amusing would be an understatement...the whole entire crowd was smiling, clapping, and enjoying the entertainment!

It was then time to reveal the 2013 Barn Quilt Contest winners and unveil the grand prize winning block...I must say it was sad to see a new 17' x 17' block in the place where my winning block has been for the last year, but Sue's block definitely looked FABULOUS on display and I was so excited for her!

After the unveiling, it was time for lunch...and barbecue really hit the spot...but more importantly,  it was time for door prizes! Lorrie and I had a conversation about how we never win drawings of chance...it just doesn't happen...and we watched quite a few happy quilters take home some stellar prizes. When Linda held up an adorable pink GO! Baby Fabric Cutter Tote, I leaned over to Lorrie and said "you could use that" and her response was "yes, I could"...and guess what, they called her name...we were dumbfounded....and SO excited!...I was just thrilled for her to win a prize to take home. Then the most incredible thing happened...as they called names for the last few prizes, I heard my name too....what?!...this never happens... My door prize the coolest thing ever...the book "Japanese Quilting Piece by Piece" by Yoko Saito (it is a DELIGHTFUL book) and an assortment pack of SCRUMPTIOUS AURIfil Threads (so totally awesome!). WOW, WOW, WOW...what a perfect treat for our trip...

After saying goodbyes and gathering our purchases and winnings, we headed off to one of our favorite quilt shops...The Quilted Moose in Gretna, NE...this shop is a must visit whenever we are in the area! We managed to find just a few a TON of marvelous things to take home...yes, we did some power shopping...in fact, time flew by while we were in there...and although we had plans to possibly visit other shops in the area, we knew we had a two hour drive to get home (and I had an anxious puppy in the kennel that I knew needed dinner and a potty break)...so after enhancing the economy of Greta, NE, we headed for home.

So, there you have it, my day at the 4th Annual AccuQuilt Barn Quilt Unveiling event...it was a perfect day - I couldn't have asked for more - time with a dear friend was just what the doctor ordered (all the quilty goodness was a bonus!).

Spectacular Shopping

JJ Stitches vendor booth - a personal favorite!
Did you enjoy my post yesterday with photos from the AQS Quilt Show - including the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild 29th Annual Quilt Show and the AQS Quilt Show Contest?...well, if that wasn't enough - the show included a merchandise mall with around 130 vendors! Yes, there was shopping GALORE - aisles upon aisles of ways to spend your hard-earned money...in fact, the shopping mall was so large, it took us the entire morning to walk down each of the aisles. I must admit, I did very well at controlling my "urge" to spend and kept my purchases to a minimum...in fact, I only purchased a couple items (although I was tempted by MANY). I thought I would share a few of my favorite booths with you..and yes, these photos were all taken with permission....

Kimber and I had a few merchants on our "must visit" list...and right at the very top was Dawn Heese at Linen Closet Designs. Dawn and I have been online friends on Twitter for years and I had always wanted to meet her in person...she has a fabulous assortment of quilting books and patterns...AND she designs fabric! Her lovely booth did not disappoint - it was filled with vintage charm and models of all her latest designs (I'm not going to lie - I'm sure I drooled a little!). Dawn was delightful and was kind enough to let me snap a few photos of her display...
Oh...and I should mention...one of my limited purchases was a stack of eighteen fat quarters from her new fabric line "Best Wishes" for Henry Glass & Co. I just adore how Dawn worked her love of vintage postcards into the collection - these fabrics are GORGEOUS in person. To see more Linen Closet Designs, visit your favorite quilt shop or
http://www.linenclosetdesigns.bigcartel.com/...

Dawn surround by her LOVELY quilts...

Our next stop was Yellow Creek Quilt Designs. Yellow Creek Quilt Designs is a quilt shop in Pearl City, Illinois....and not only do they offer quilting materials and supplies - but they have their own original quilt patterns and designs! This was a large (and busy) booth filled with a traditional, yet homespun appeal...and all sorts of treasures... My favorite Yellow Creek Quilt Designs model on display was Grant's March (shown in the top left of the first photo)...

The next photo comes to you from The Cottage Rose - A Quilt Shop. This quaint booth had adorable lights hanging above the displays and all sorts of fun items! The Cottage Rose is a full service quilt shop in Marion, Iowa  that offers original patterns and designs.....they had a friendly booth with some wonderful autumn items!

A favorite stop for both Kimber and myself was the Mountain Lodge Antiques booth. Cindy Adams, the owner, was extremely interesting to speak with and quite knowledgeable. She talked with us at length - giving us history on a number of items in her extensive booth and sharing her vast knowledge. She was quite personable...and it was a treat to hear her talk about some of the special vintage quilts and fabric panels in her booth. For me, it was also quite wonderful to see yards of vintage trims, laces, and silk ribbon for sale...
Cindy does not have a website (yet), but you can reach her by e-mail at: gandcadams@comcast.net.

Cindy in her "history-filled" booth...

I think the best display was done by JJ Stitches. This charming booth was warm and cozy...and featured vintage furniture, displays, and beds...it was extremely inviting! Beautiful patterns and beautiful quilts - I wanted to spend my afternoon relaxing in this space...

These were just a few highlights from our visit...there were many other wonderful displays filled with shopping delights. Of course I had to visit my "new best friend" Phyllis Paul from Cozy Quarters...you may remember, I fell (head over heels) in love with Phyllis's designs at the Omaha Quilters' Guild Quilt Show back in June (you can read that post and see photos of her booth by visiting this link). I couldn't wait to see what new designs Phyllis had available...her pieces make me immediately happy! Here is the other item I purchased...the Cozy Catch All pattern and kit...isn't it WONDERFUL?! Again - I simply adore her detailed/embellished packaging! Visit: http://designsbycozyquarters.com/store/ to see more of Phyllis's AMAZING designs and kits....

So there you have it -  a look at my shopping experience at the Des Moines AQS Quilt Show and Contest....I hope you enjoyed this little photographic journey! Tomorrow I will share what I purchased at the antique mall we visited after the event...
