Halloween Sweet Snacks Mug Rug

Sweet Snacks Mug Rug ©Copyright 2024 Belinda Karls-Nace/Blue Ribbon Designs, LLC http://www.blueribbondesigns.blogspot.com
Greetings friends! I wanted to stop by today with a little Halloween fun. It has been a bit hectic here since I returned from traveling abroad, but I will be back to share about my trip very soon (it was an amazing journey). I have been playing catch-up since arriving home, but managed to make a little time for Halloween sewing. I needed a little "play time" in my sewing studio, so I took my "Sweet Snacks Mug Rug" pattern and adapted it for Halloween, using scraps of fabric from Sweet Tooth by Elea Lutz for Poppie Cotton

I followed the pattern, but decided to remove the heart and steam stitches and add a ghost as the "steam." The ghost was free-form cut without a template and is not a part of the pattern. I applied HeatnBond Fusible Interfacing to the back of a piece of white fabric (this helps to keep the background fabric from showing through - I wanted it to look like steam, so a little background showing through is good, but I wanted my ghost nice and white). Next, I fused HeatnBond Lite Adhesive to the back (I used a piece leftover from the sheet I printed the teacup templates on). I then used a pencil to draw a free-form ghost and cut it out. After machine appliquéing the pieces in place, I hand stitched the ghost eyes and mouth, using French knots for the eyes and straight stitches for the mouth. I was super happy with the results!

My Sweet Snacks Mug Rug pattern is perfect for seasonal sewing and gifts...is beginner friendly...and is great for using up scraps. I can't wait to make some in holiday prints - I am thinking of adding a gingerbread cookie!

Oh What Fun Fabric Tour

Oh What Fun Hoop Ornaments ©Copyright 2023 Belinda Karls-Nace/Blue Ribbon Designs, LLC http://www.blueribbondesigns.blogspot.com
Greetings friends, happy Friday! I am thrilled to be today's stop on the Oh What Fun Fabric Tour - thank you so much for stopping by for a visit. I have some very fun projects to share...all created with the new Oh What Fun Fabric Collection designed by Elea Lutz for Poppie Cotton. I enjoyed being creative and playing with these detailed, cheerful, Christmas prints. This brand new collection (shipping to shops this week) has a vintage-look Santa Claus, the sweetest snowmen and reindeer, along with charming plaids, polka dots, florals and snowflakes…all done in a lovely, bright and cheerful color palette. I find this Poppie Cotton Christmas collection quite endearing - I was truly inspired by all the tiny details in these adorable prints. This month, for my projects, I didn't use any patterns - in fact, I just started playing and these were the results.

The tiny details inspired these wooden hoop ornaments. I used small 4-inch wooden hoops - with 3/4" pink rick rack around the perimeter on the back of the hoop and the back is covered with wool blend felt from Benzie Design. I did machine appliqué for the motifs - then added hand stitching, beads, buttons, pins, and wool felt - just small embellishments that I had on hand. I used gingham ribbon for the bows and made twisted cord for the hangers. Everything is attached by machine or hand - no glue was used. These were quite fun to make - in fact, so much so, that I have three more started to add to my collection  - a little bird, a star, and a candy cane.

As always, I *had to* create a special pincushion with this collection...I decided to go with the theme of one of the prints and cut and appliqué a large snowflake. This time my fat quarters didn't have any selvage ends to create with, so I decided to sew a more detailed machine appliqué. I didn't have a pattern; I just designed and created it as I went along. This is a 6” square pincushion perfect for those winter months or for gift giving. The trim is white vintage lace....and I used star-shaped specialty pins for embellishment. I was thrilled with how well this came out - it is just as magical as I envisioned!

Finally, when Poppie Cotton reached out to me months ago to design with this collection, I told them I would like to make some holiday bunting - at that time I had no idea this collection would have a fabric panel with printed Merry Christmas bunting. When I saw an image of the panel a few weeks ago and the printed bunting, I almost decided not to share my bunting photos...but since mine is quite different, I decided it would be fun to share it as well. My bunting is a mix of banner flags and Christmas trees. My trees are triangles, with wool blend felt trunks and have star-shaped specialty pins at the top. The banner flags are made from the cutest prints...and I made a very narrow red binding to put them all together. It was not the easiest to photograph, as it is so long...but I managed to lay it out in my photography light box and get a decent photo with a white background...I also took several photos of it hanging above our fireplace. It is a very happy bunting and I look forward to displaying it this holiday season!

Kitty Loves Candy Fabric Tour

Pretty Posies Pouch, Mini-Medi Tote Bag, Forty-Five Tote Bag, and Happy Cat Pincushion ©Copyright 2023 Belinda Karls-Nace/Blue Ribbon Designs, LLC http://www.blueribbondesigns.blogspot.com
Greetings friends, happy Wednesday! I am thrilled to be today's stop on the Kitty Loves Candy Fabric Tour - thank you so much for stopping by for a visit. I have some fun projects to share...all created with the new Kitty Loves Candy Fabric Collection designed by Lori Woods for Poppie Cotton. I enjoyed being creative and playing with these unique, cheerful Halloween prints. This brand new collection (shipping to shops this month) has charming fall pumpkins and florals, the sweetest witch and farm scene, along with that charming hat-wearing kitty cat…all done in a surprisingly modern and bright color palette. This is Poppie Cotton's first Halloween collection and I find it very endearing - the more I worked with it, the more I was inspired by it. This month, for my projects, I used my very own patterns - in fact, I created a brand new medium tote bag pattern using this fabric collection for the model. I also had a chance to play around in my studio without a pattern for my monthly pincushion...

Working through my projects, I started with my "Pretty Posies Pouch" pattern and created a super cute mini charm zippered pouch with a boxed bottom and a wrist strap. With all the wonderful little details in each print, it was fun to use mini charm squares to focus on the special motifs in each fabric...

Next is my "Mini-Medi Tote Bag". This is a brand new pattern I just listed in my Etsy Shop today! This medium-sized tote bag was also created with mini charm squares - hence the name. It features two pockets on the outside with round bottoms and two large pockets inside. It can be made with one charm pack and one yard of any fabric you choose, but I thought it was wonderful in these special Halloween fabrics. The directions and diagrams in this new pattern are quite thorough, so this is great project for all skill levels. I used Poppie Cotton Country Confetti Licorice Black for the bag/pocket linings and handles.

Finally, I created my "Forty-Five Tote Bag"...a big oversized tote, perfect for a retreat or outing. This large tote bag can also be created with one charm pack and one yard of any fabric of your choosing. It features two pockets on the outside, each large enough to hold today's largest cell phones...and two large pockets on the inside.

As always, I *had to* create a special pincushion with this collection...I present to you, "Happy Cat Pincushion." This time my fat quarters didn't have any selvage ends to create with, so I decided to go all out on the machine appliqué. I didn't have a pattern; I just designed the applique in EQ8 and worked on it as I went along – this 6” square pincushion is an original design and is all machine appliqué. The whiskers and mouth were machine stitched – the flowers on the hat were fussy cut from Pretty Pumpkins Black and machine stitched in place with raw edge appliqué. The Rick Rack is ¾” from Riley Blake Designs in the color Hot Pink....and I used a star-shaped specialty pin in the top of the hat. I was tickled with how well this came out - it is just as I envisioned!

Hollyhock Lane Fabric Tour

Hollyhock Lane Mini Quilt, Pincushion and Zippered Pouch ©Copyright 2023 Belinda Karls-Nace/Blue Ribbon Designs, LLC http://www.blueribbondesigns.blogspot.com
Happy Monday - I am thrilled to be today's stop on the Hollyhock Lane Fabric Tour - thank you so much for stopping by for a visit. I have some very special projects to share...all created with the new Hollyhock Lane Fabric Collection designed by Sheri McCulley for Poppie Cotton. I enjoyed being creative and playing with these gorgeous prints. This brand new collection (shipping to shops now) has a delicate fabric panel (used in my mini quilt), delightful florals, and fabulous small geometric prints…all done in a  soft, cheerful color palette. As usual, for my projects, I didn't start with a pattern(s) - I just played in my studio. I knew when I saw these prints (months ago) that the fabric panel would be perfect for a mini quilt so that was my plan...and I just started cutting and sewing...

Hollyhock Lane Mini Quilt, Pincushion and Zippered Pouch ©Copyright 2023 Belinda Karls-Nace/Blue Ribbon Designs, LLC http://www.blueribbondesigns.blogspot.com

I decided to cut the panel blocks apart...then I cut twelve blocks the same size from Country Confetti Marshmallow White. I cut 12 hearts from different prints in the collection and machine appliquéd them to the Country Confetti blocks...then pieced them together to make my quilt top. Instead of fabric binding, I used ½” Hand Dyed Rick Rack from Lady Dot Creates around the perimeter...I also added small heart buttons as embellishments. This mini quilt measures approximately 23¾” H x 17½” W and has a hanging sleeve on the back. Isn't it a happy quilt?!

In usual Belinda fashion, after my mini quilt was complete, I just *had to* make a smaller project or two with some of my leftover fabric. We all know I love foundation piecing, so for my pincushion (I seem to make a pincushion with each Poppie Cotton collection), I did a small, 6" foundation pieced tulip block - and it turned out just as I envisioned. I trimmed my pincushion with ½” Hand Dyed Rick Rack from Lady Dot Creates. I also fussy cut one of the panel blocks (I loved the "kindess" text) and appliquéd it to a piece of wool felt from Benzie Design. I cut it into a flag shape and attached it, along with some flower shapes I cut from wool felt with a couple sewing pins.

I also wanted to try to use some of the heart windows left from cutting the mini quilt heart appliqués (I try to use each and every piece of fabric), so I machine appliquéd one to a small, patchwork zippered pouch. I embellished the pouch with a couple wooden buttons (a handmade button and a bird button). This pouch is the perfect size for a small project or sewing/stitching tools and will be a lovely addition to a large project bag.

Sunshine and Chamomile Fabric Tour

Sunshine and Joy ©Copyright 2022 Belinda Karls-Nace/Blue Ribbon Designs, LLC http://www.blueribbondesigns.blogspot.com
Happy Wednesday - welcome to the Poppie Cotton Sunshine and Chamomile Fabric Tour! I am thrilled to be today's stop on the tour - thank you so much for visiting. If you are a regular reader and you are wondering - yes, I am still in New Zealand....I wrote and scheduled this post before I left...so, while you are reading this, my New Zealand itinerary says I will be exploring the Nile River glowworm caves and hiking the Paparoa National Park today.

I have a very special lap quilt to share (and a little needlebook and project bag too!), created with the new Sunshine and Chamomile Fabric Collection by Poppie Cotton. I was thrilled to put on my quilt designer hat again and work with these bright and happy prints. This brand new collection (shipping to shops this month) features fabulous hexagon prints and gorgeous florals...all done in a cheerful color pallet. It was a joy working on this project, as I recently started converting my original cross stitch designs to quilting patterns (a dream of mine for a while) and this quilt features five blocks from my cross stitch design Comfort and Joy. Creating this quilt definitely made my heart smile! I combined my cross stitch chart title and the name of this fabric collection for the name of my quilt...so, without further ado...

 Sunshine and Joy

I titled my lap quilt (or wall hanging...or what I am going to use it for, a picnic quilt) "Sunshine and Joy" - this quilt was built around my original cross stitch design "Comfort and Joy" and a basic pieced quilt block. It was made with traditional piecing. Nine blocks make of up my lap quilt along with sashing and cornerstones - giving it a finished size of 47" x 47" and borders could be added to make it larger. I used a fat quarter stack and a little bit of Country Confetti (Marshmallow White) yardage for the background...and Gingham Picnic in Grass for the stems and Barnyard Bandana in Buckle Brown for the bird beak and legs. If there is interest, I will write a pattern for this happy quilt upon my return.

Upon completion of my quilt, I was compelled to work with some of my leftover fabric pieces and made the sweetest little needlebook with pockets inside...along with a small zippered project bag using one of the focal fabrics. Check out the Poppie Cotton Chicken Flower Charm zipper pull on the little project bag - isn't it CUTE?! I even fussy cut a little heart and appliqued it on the first wool page of the needlebook. An adorable little set for a stitcher...I may need to make more of these for special holiday gifts...
