Joy To My Heart

When life is challenging, it is always reassuring to have family and friends that love and understand you (good days and bad)...and I am blessed with an incredible circle of loved ones.

It was the best therapy in the world to spend my birthday in Florida this year with my mom and Dan, who treated me like a queen and made me feel extra special. We spent the day exploring Silver Springs State Park - we took a lovely St. John's River Cruise in the morning, then had a delightful picnic lunch in the park (and my mom even had a cupcake with a birthday candle for me!). That evening, they made dinner reservations at Jiko - The Cooking Place, a restaurant in Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, serving African cuisine. It was an exceptional meal - and I was served an amazing dessert (again, with a birthday candle!) - it was Mulva Pudding featuring ice cream and a tuile cookie in a bird's nest-style presentation inspired by the birds of Africa - it was so unique (and perfect for me)! I also received a Mickey Mouse birthday pin and a phone call at the restaurant from Goofy (singing "Happy Birthday to You"). These will all be memories that last a lifetime. This day brought joy to my heart...

...and the joy and healing continued, when I returned home and found a couple packages/cards waiting for me from faraway friends...and I had a scheduled lunch with my dear friend Mary. I had to share a few photos with you - I have the best friends a girl could ask for - talented, generous, thoughtful - the list goes on and on. These incredible women (you all know who you are) make me a better person - they inspire me and fuel my creativity...they lift me up!
(NOTE: It's still all about the squirrel! 😊- insert squirrel emoji here...)

A special thank you to Robin for this information!

....and I have to show you how I use the Moda tins in the last photo (which I ADORE!) - they are both sitting at my sewing machine table where I use them every single day. The long one has the tools to clean my machine (which I do every time I change a bobbin or needle) and the smaller one has my most used presser feet, screwdriver, and needle changing tool. They work perfectly and are super pretty too - they both make me smile. I need to purchase another smaller one (or several in every size!) - I would really like to use one for my project sewing labels....

I also was able to celebrate my special day with my in-laws - my kind-hearted mother-in-law made her scrumptious homemade pizza (it's SO GOOD) and even baked me a BEAUTIFUL heart-shaped cake...isn't it wonderful?! Our afternoon together made me feel loved...

I guess I am sharing all of this because...there is light, even in the darkest of days. The moral of today's post - surround yourself with those who build you up and make you better - those who challenge and inspire you...and those who support you when it rains, not just when it shines...
“Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and thinkers, but most of all, surround yourself with those who see the greatness within you, even when you don't see it yourself.”   -Edmund Lee

Something Sweet & Simple

I like to bake from scratch...I thoroughly enjoy my time in the kitchen, especially when I am baking. Funny things is, I am not much on eating baked goods, just making them....which works out well for my husband, friends, and local nursing home residents. Although I rarely use a mix, I couldn't help but pick-up a couple of the summertime flavor cake mixes from Pillsbury...seriously...who can resist flavors like Orangesicle, Pink Lemonade, and Key Lime?? If anything, I figured I would have a couple on hand when I needed a quick pick-me-up or sugar fix. Well, tonight was that night...after the stresses of the day and mowing the lawn, I needed a little something sweet and some caffeine...so I grabbed the Orangesicle Cake Mix and coordinating Creamy Supreme Frosting...

Yep, the one for me has sugar crystal sprinkles...because I am a girlie girl and I love sprinkles! I must admit, event though I used a cake mix, these are pretty scrumptious...I may have to get a few more for the pantry...it was the perfect pick-me-up and easy peasy!

An Anniversary Celebration

Over the weekend, Travis (my husband) and I had the pleasure of helping his parents celebrate their 40th Wedding Anniversary. They were married in Las Vegas at the Silver Wedding Bell Chapel in 1972....I wish I had a photo from their wedding day to share with you - they have a fabulous wedding photo. To the right is a photo of the happy couple taken at our wedding in 2000.

We decided to have a nice afternoon lunch at our house and my husband would fire up the grill. He barbecued the meats and I made all the fixings....and because my father-in-law is a "chocoholic", we stopped by the local bakery for a beautiful German chocolate cake. With red ruby as the classic gift material for the 40th anniversary, I found some incredible hand blown ruby red wine glasses for a gift (silly me, I didn't take a photo) - we also picked up a bottle of chocolate wine for the man who can never have enough chocolate. It truly was a lovely afternoon as we reminisced about the last forty years while enjoying (for the most part) a home cooked meal.

Wishing my mother-in-law and father-in-law many more years of happiness...may your marriage continue to be blessed with love, joy, and memorable occasions!

The Iowa State Fair in Photos

The 2012 Iowa State Fair Butter Cow
It was a beautiful August day, as my husband and I headed to the Iowa State Fair for our yearly visit. The Iowa State Fair is the largest event in the state of Iowa and one of the oldest and largest agricultural and industrial expositions in the country - annually attracting more than a million people from all over the world. Of course, there are exhibits and attractions we *have to* see at the fair each year - the butter cow, the big bull, the big boar, the fabric and threads exhibition, the photography, the ugly cakes....and of course, we must have some fair food! There are so many AMAZING things to see each year...even the gardens on the fairgrounds are well maintained. I always enjoy seeing the barnyard animals and livestock (especially the rabbits!)....and the photography and dollhouses....along with the fruit, vegetable, and food ribbon winners. Here is a little photographic journey of our visit (heavy on needlework and quilting)....I'll let the photographs do the talking and add little captions when necessary....click on individual photos for a large look...

I love spicy food - the hotter, the better - therefore, I couldn't resist
taking a photo of the hot pepper entries....

Check out the details on the Victorian house cake...
and the peacock cake was gorgeous!

I feel in love with this Mini Lop rabbit - so ADORABLE!

The  Animal Learning Center has agricultural education exhibits and
features live births of various species including cows, sows, nanny goats and ewes.
I loved seeing all the newborn animals....

The horses are always wonderful to see - here is one having a bite
 to eat before a showing....

2012 Big Bull (World Super Bull) - 2,646 lbs.

2012 Big Boar - Reggie - 1,335 lbs.

New this year: the "World's Largest Chocolate Moose in Captivity" - weighing 320 pounds...
standing more the 10 feet high and 118 inches in length. Hundreds of pounds of Dutch
chocolate were applied in layers and hand-carved by Chocolaterie Stam to create the moose
...
...as you can see, I needed to be a bit taller to get the entire moose in one photo!
