Blooming & Blue:
Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Blog Tour

Greetings friends, fans, and blog hoppers - I am thrilled to be one of the first stops on the Quiltmker's 100 Blocks Blog Tour. This quilty blog hop is celebrating the release of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Vol. 12...and to say I am excited to be a part of this special magazine and blog tour for the third time would be an understatement - I am such a HUGE fan, collecting the 100 block issues over the years...and I am honored, once again, to be in the company of so many extremely talented quilt designers that I admire...and even more thrilled to have my block on the cover!

 If you are visiting my blog for the first time - welcome! Let me introduce myself...my name is Belinda Karls-Nace and I am a needlework and quilting designer, teacher, and professional finisher by trade (Blue Ribbon Designs). I picked up my first needle at the young age of six (and made my first quilt around the age of eight) and have been designing professionally in the Cross Stitch industry for almost 15 years. I am completely obsessed with just about anything created with a needle and thread - and when I am not working on my original cross stitch and counted thread designs, I find sheer enjoyment sewing and quilting...and in the very near future, I will be adding my sewing and quilting patterns to my brand (along with patterns that combine my love of handwork and quilting). I am an enthusiastic AccuQuilt fan, proudly owning all four of their fabric cutters and a wide assortment of cutting dies...and I am lucky enough to do freelance designing and sample piecing/quilting for them, as well. My blog follows my creative journey - including needlework, sewing, quilting, and machine embroidery...my handcrafted Etsy items...my original designs and patterns...tips and tricks...pretty much anything that inspires me...I hope you enjoy your stay and visit often!

 Without further ado, here is my original block (YAY!!!), which I titled "Blooming Out of the Blue" - the magazine edited  my title (I'm guessing for space) to "Blooming & Blue", which I guess works just as well.  My original quilt block  is #1147 and can be found on page 31. My regular readers know I love to combine traditional piecing with machine appliqué, so creating this cheerful, floral block just came naturally.


This entire block is AccuQuilt GO! friendly...and for those of you wanting to take advantage of the cutting dies I used, here is a complete list:


I like to audition my original blocks in multiples, with other traditional blocks, and with solid blocks to make sure they can be versatile...I also like to design blocks that will work well in a number of colorways. This particular block just happens to be a great scrap buster block! I had fun playing with this design in EQ7 (Electric Quilt 7 Software) and creating color variations to show it off...here is how it would look in a couple seasonal color schemes and how it would look as a 48" x 48" quilt...



 For fun, I decided to work up my block with 1930's reproduction fabrics - which is totally out of my normal style/comfort zone...here is my block worked with fabrics  from the new collection Naptime 2 by Darlene Zimmerman for Robert Kaufman Fabrics...

    Oh this is right up my alley, love the applique overlaid on patchwork! My sewing is taking a backseat to caring for my mom this season, so no home crafted gifts. But I have managed to design a quilt, now if I can find the time to make it. Thanks for the fun!

    Love the applique........I made a xmas sampler quilt for my youngest daughter's new inlaws....the mother quilts also but has not ever received a homemade quilt herself....so we put some ideas together and came up with a 2 sided sampler quilt.....she will receive it on xmas.......so excited....

    The only thing I'm making as a gift is actually from my own block, and will be on the tour on Thursday! I realized as I was finishing it yesterday that I love it, but don't need it, and my aunt will love it enough for both of us. I may try to whip up a table runner for my stepmother, but also I may run out of time.

    Great block! I love applique on pieced backgrounds too!

    I particularly love your block done in the browns and homespun. Currently I'm making a wall hanging for a grandson, based on a combination of Van Gogh's Starry Night and Dr. Who.'s Tardis. It's really out of my comfort zone, but an interesting challenge.

    Your block is so pretty in all the different fabrics! Thanks for sharing! I have made several sachets from holiday fabric with a ribbon drawstring. I plan to stuff with cedar shavings and a small piece of quilt batting sprinkled with a few drops of Douglas Fir essential oil. My Christmas gifts will have everyone saying, "What smells so good?"

    Your block is beautiful. Love the blue fabrics! I have done very little quilting; just small items like pillows, but a dream has always been to do a quilt. Maybe someday. My Christmas projects are cross stitch. I am working on the Shepherd's Bush design The Toy Gatherer, but that won't be done until next Christmas. I was in Williamsburg recently and couldn't resist the Threadwork Primitives design, Christmas Fruit Basket, and I always do an ornament. This year's will be one of JBW's 2014 Christmas Tree Ornaments.

    What a beautiful block and beautiful in a quilt.
    I am working on little pillows for gifts, appliqué wool and stitchery, as well as punch needle, then I fill them with balsam, so the recipients will have the smell of pine in their homes.

    Every year I make stitched ornaments for our grandchildren - we're up to six now. I always include the year and their names. Some have been stuffed, others flat, including Christmas trees, mittens, and gingerbread boys/girls. I think this year they will be snowpeople!

    Hi RBG! I'm another Iowa girl and also love my Viking machines! I have the Ruby and Sapphire and they get plenty of use. This Christmas, I am making a few table runners for friends, trying to match their décor and colors. It's a fun project and one that doesn't take a lot of time. My friends are always so appreciative of my sewing efforts and skills, which makes me happy! Happy Holidays to you!

    I absolutely adore your block. I wish I were blessed to have all the things needed to make the block. I'm knitting dishclothes for widows in two widows group to which I belong. I blessed a few widows that attended the December meeting at one group last year and one lady asked if she could buy some more dishclothes, so I made her some more. That group has grown and in the meantime I have become part of two more groups. So, my needles have been clicking. Thanks for the beautiful block and the giveaways.

    I am doing a lot of embroidery this year. Cute Christmas tea towels with red work. I hope to get a few mug rugs done. And I love to work with paper clay and put together some snowmen. That should keep me fairly busy :)

    Have some crocheting to do and then quilting a quilt for hubby made from his old pants. I do have a question pile of his pants though… were they to make into shorts or for the quilt? Guess I will find out after he gets in quilt! (and then hear about it again this spring :)

    Very nice block! I have a couple of projects needing to get started and finished by Christmas; a little house on the prairie quilt using Amy Friend's free pattern found on her blog duringquiettime for my 5 year old grandson but I will be changing out four of the blocks and adding in his favorite parts of the books (red mittens, covered wagon, real log cabin, ox) and two placemats using Lorna's so dog gone cute pattern from her blog sewfresquilts. kthurn@bektel.com

My P.E.O. chapter (http://peointernational.org) has an ornament swap at the holiday potluck. I maintain that ornaments don't have to hang on the tree and I make something quilty -- this year, a skinny (10x39) banner that will fit a front door or the narrow space between windows.

    I've got to admit I'm a very last minute person and haven't planned anything specific for Christmas sewing or quilting except helping make costumes for my granddaughters' school Christmas program. I'm sure I'll make some small gifts when the time gets closer, but nothing planned yet!
