If you are visiting my blog for the first time - welcome! Let me introduce myself...my name is Belinda Karls-Nace and I am a needlework and quilting designer, teacher, and professional finisher by trade (Blue Ribbon Designs). I picked up my first needle at the young age of six (and made my first quilt around the age of eight) and have been designing professionally in the Cross Stitch industry for over 10 years. I am completely obsessed with just about anything created with a needle and thread - and when I am not working on my original cross stitch and counted thread designs, I find sheer enjoyment sewing and quilting...and in the very near future, I will be adding my sewing and quilting patterns to my brand (along with patterns that combine my love of handwork and quilting). I am an enthusiastic AccuQuilt fan, proudly owning all four of their fabric cutters and a wide assortment of cutting dies...and I am lucky enough to do some freelance designing and sample piecing/quilting for them, as well. My blog follows my creative journey - including needlework, sewing, quilting, and machine embroidery...my handcrafted Etsy items...my original designs and patterns...tips and tricks...pretty much anything that inspires me...I hope you enjoy your stay and visit often!
"Sunshine and Daisies" - Block #1051 - Page 37 |
My original quilt block for Volume 11 is called "Sunshine and Daisies" - it is block #1051 and can be found on page 37. My regular readers know I love to combine traditional piecing with machine appliqué, so creating this cheerful, floral block just came naturally. This entire block is AccuQuilt GO! friendly...and for those of you wanting to take advantage of the cutting dies I used, here is a complete list:
- 55000 (Square - 6.5")
- 55006 (Square - 3.5")
- 55002 (Triangle 4 7/8")
- 55009 (Half Square - 3" Finished Triangle)
- 55327 (Daisy)
- 55045 (1" Strip Cutter) - used for stems - 1" WOF strip was put through a Clover Bias Tape Maker (Art No. 464/12) and sub cut to make four 1/2" x 6" stems or simply cut four 1/2" strips (6" long), if preferred.
I like to audition my original blocks in multiples, with other traditional blocks, and with solid blocks to make sure they can be versatile...I also like to design blocks that will work well in a number of colorways. This particular block just happens to be a great scrap buster block! I had fun playing with this design in EQ7 (Electric Quilt 7 Software) and creating color variations to show it off...here is how it would look in a few different color schemes and how it would look adding borders for a table topper or wall hanging....
Since this is a 12" finished block, I decided it would make a fun, bright, and cozy pillow. For a change, I chose to work it up in shades of blue and green, using Robert Kaufman fabrics for the the blues and a fun older Island Batik for the green. I simply added 1" strips (1/2" finished) on all four sides...and then 2" strips (1-1/2" finished) and 2" square (1-1/2" finished) cornerstones on all four sides... and added an envelope back...perfect for a 16" square Pellon pillow form...
Thank you so much for visiting my blog and sharing in my enthusiasm (and for reading this far)...and as a reward, I have a few giveaway opportunities!

ReplyDeleteAlways loved daisies and they are perfect together with sunshine! Love your block! I love reading, baking and hand sewing!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy other forms of handwork, not just patchwork and quilting: knitting, crochet, embroidery. I also read a lot, both for work and pleasure, and just sometimes they coincide.
ReplyDeleteI love quilting, sewing, knitting, crochet and tatting!
ReplyDeleteMy hobbies are reading, quilting & knitting. Beautiful block - thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHobbies? only ONE! Quilting! Love the color choices you showed above!

ReplyDeleteI love quilting, crocheting, embroidery, just about anything using a needle!
ReplyDeleteI love quilting, gardening and baking.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy knitting, crochet, basket weaving, embroidery, baking, and growing flowers, but quilting is my all-time favorite. I love working with fabric the best.

ReplyDeleteMy number one hobby is quilting, but cross stitch and embroidery have always been right alongside. kinderpam@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteVery pretty block! I love quilting, cross stitch, embroidery, and knitting. Thanks for the chance.
ReplyDeleteBesides collecting fabrics (sewing), I also love to collect books (and read). :-) I am trying to get back into cross stitching.
ReplyDeleteI love applique! At first glance, your blue variation reminded me of snowflakes. I might explore that possibility a little more!
ReplyDeleteI love to read, hence I spend a lot of time reading blogs about quilting, rather than working on projects. I taught myself how to crochet and with help from an aunt learned to make granny square. For many years, most of my creative time was spent doing counted cross stitch, but since I starting quilts I don't do much else, reading my kindle occasionally. poladydwd(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteYour block is just beautiful. Applique takes a lot of work but the end result is worth it. Thank you for being a part of the QM's 100 Blocks, Volume 11 Blog Tour and the chance to win a copy of this awesome and priceless magazine.

ReplyDeleteThank you for joining in the Quiltmaker blog hop.
Quilting IS my number ONE! But I love to bake, bake, bake. I also enjoy complicated recipes that yield awesome results like a steak sauce from scratch that used over 4 lbs of vegetables, 4 cups of liquid, makes only 1 cup of sauce and takes about 4 hours to make! Depth of flavor does not begin to describe it - It makes umami act like a toddler!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely stunning! I'd actually try it, IF I were taking a class with you! :)
ReplyDeleteOver the years I've tried many hobbies and past-times. Now I quilt and do some paper crafting - scrapping and card making. If I'm not doing those two things then I'm doing my genealogy research or reading. So many ancestors, so many books! Thanks for this opportunity. a_mccay@yahoo.com

ReplyDeleteI've managed to whittle all my crafty stuff into quilting - wasn't easy, though!
ReplyDeleteWell, I mostly do quilting, which I LOVE. But sometimes I will make jewelry or cards. I also take fitness classes 5 days a week which some might call a hobby, but I think of it as a way to stay healthy and energetic.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of applique on traditional blocks. Quilting is my favourite hobby.
ReplyDeleteI learned to sew on a machine when I was 6 or 7. My first projects were crude doll cloths first and finally clothing when I learned in my 8th grade sewing class. I also made stuffed toys from patterns. I got serious about quilting in the late 90's.

ReplyDeleteI embroider, cross stitch, needle punch, appliqué and piece. Thanks for such a cute block. It looks fantastic in the pillow. Great fabric choices.
ReplyDeleteThe original block is sweet, but the other color "options" really make the design "pop".
ReplyDeleteBesides quilting and needlework, I like to do many other crafts (i.e., quilling, plastic canvas designs, yarn dyeing, weaving) as well as knitting and crocheting. I still want to get back to watercolor painting and maybe acrylic painting, too.
I am a quilter, but for the last six months I have been making costumes for various people. I really enjoyed doing something different for a change!
